<Werden> : The Fleeting Moment Between War and Eden

Artist Statement

​

The German word Werden (meaning 'Becoming' or a fluid state of change) has been the core of my work since 2016. Reading Nietzsche, I intuitively saw a collision of two words within it: 'War' and 'Eden.' For me, Werden is more than a shift in state; it represents the fierce 'War' constantly taking place within the 'Eden' of life.

This struggle resembles the myth of Sisyphus. We seem to repeat our days pushing a heavy, meaningless stone up a hill, yet just as yesterday's stone differs from today's, no two days are ever entirely the same.

My work focuses on this subtle state of flux within the eternal repetition. The <Werden> series is a painterly attempt to capture the fleeting, ever-changing energy of each moment amid life's struggles. The thick traces of paint on the canvas—seemingly still but constantly simmering—are proof of our present, progressive moments, breathing alive through our daily battles.

<Werden> : 투쟁(War)과 낙원(Eden) 사이, 끊임없이 생성되는 찰나

​

  독일어로 '유동적인 흐름' 혹은 '변화하는 상태성(Becoming)'을 뜻하는 단어 "Werden(베르덴)"은 2016년부터 내 작업의 뼈대를 이루는 핵심어다. 니체의 텍스트 속에서 이 단어를 처음 마주했을 때, 나는 직관적으로 'War(전쟁, 투쟁)'와 'Eden(낙원, 삶)'이라는 두 단어의 충돌과 결합을 떠올렸다. 즉 나에게 Werden은 단순한 상태의 변화를 넘어, 삶이라는 낙원(Eden) 안에서 끊임없이 벌어지는 치열한 '투쟁(War)' 그 자체를 상징한다.

이러한 삶의 투쟁은 산 정상으로 바위를 밀어 올리면 다시 바닥으로 굴러떨어지는 형벌을 견뎌야 했던 시시포스(Sisyphus)의 굴레와 닮아 있다. 우리는 매일 무의미해 보이는 무거운 돌을 밀어 올리며 반복되는 일상을 살아가는 듯하지만, 어제의 돌과 오늘의 돌이 다르듯 우리의 하루는 결코 완전히 같지 않다.

나는 영원한 반복의 형벌 속에서도 미세하게 요동치며 '변화하는 중의 상태성'에 주목한다. <Werden> 연작은 삶의 고단한 투쟁 속에서, 매 순간 다르게 변모하고 생성되는 그 찰나의 에너지를 캔버스 위에 포착하려는 회화적 기록이다. 멈춰있는 듯 보이나 보는이의 눈을 통해 끊임없이 운동하는 물감의 궤적들은, 매일의 투쟁 속에서 비로소 살아 숨 쉬는 우리의 현재 진행형의 순간들을 증명한다.
