<The Brown Figures> (2013–Present)

 

  The <The Brown Figures> series, ongoing since the autumn of 2013, centers on the human figure, yet it does not portray specific individuals as traditional portraits do. Rather, it is a visual manifestation of the universal existence of modern individuals drifting through the city, as well as a projection of my own conscious imagery onto the canvas.

Assuming the role of an urban flâneur, I observe and collect images of people walking the streets and pedestrians gazing absentmindedly at their surroundings. I am drawn to them because it is within this most unguarded, natural state—unconscious of any camera—that the raw, inherent 'body language' unique to our contemporary era and specific locales truly reveals itself.

These collected visual fragments are then subjectively selected and reconstructed to align with my inner psychological landscape. I approach these figures as if observing an ever-changing landscape. The paint dripping down under the weight of gravity, the rough dry-brush strokes scratching across the surface, and the spontaneous brushwork are all painterly devices employed to vividly capture these living, breathing, fleeting moments.

This formative practice is an intentional effort to avoid sinking into my own narrow, personal emotions; instead, I take a step back to capture the universal sentiments of our time with an objective gaze. Ultimately, <The Brown Figures> materializes the inner emotions of ordinary modern people living in the liminal space between the digital and analog eras into a visual language, seeking to articulate the "here and now"—the palpable sensations and realities of life.

  2013년 가을부터 현재까지 이어져 온 <갈색 형상> 연작은 인물을 대상으로 하지만, 특정 개인을 재현한 초상화는 아니다.  그것은 도시를 부유하는 현대인들의 보편적 실존을 빌어, 내 의식의 심상이 캔버스 위에 시각화된 결과물에 가깝다.

나는 도시의 산책자가 되어 거리를 걷는 사람들, 그리고 무언가를 무심히 바라보는 행인들을 관찰하고 채집한다. 내가 그들에게 주목하는 이유는 카메라를 의식하지 않는 가장 무방비한 자연스러움 속에서, 비로소 현시대와 특정 지역이 품고 있는 고유한 '몸짓 언어'가 날것 그대로 배어 나오기 때문이다.

수집된 시각적 파편들은 나의 내면적 심상에 맞춰 주관적으로 선별되고 재구성된다. 나는 인물화를 마치 시시각각 변하는 풍경화처럼 응시한다. 중력을 이기지 못하고 흘러내리는 물감, 캔버스를 긁고 지나가는 거친 갈필, 그리고 우발적인 붓 터치들은 살아 숨 쉬는 찰나의 순간을 가장 생동감 있게 낚아채는 회화적 장치들이다.

이러한 조형적 실천은 작가 개인의 좁은 감정에만 침잠하는 것을 경계하고, 한 걸음 물러선 객관적 시선으로 이 시대의 보편적인 정서를 담아내려는 의도다. <갈색 형상>은 디지털과 아날로그의 틈새를 살아가는 평범한 현대인들의 내면의 정서를 조형적 언어로 구체화 하고 '지금 여기', 즉 현실적인 삶의 감각과 상황들을 말하고자 한다.
