Looking for the face 2013 - 

Artist Statement

​

Amidst a multitude of relationships that felt less than real, I sought to capture the most transparent expressions and the true essence of human beings.

I would meticulously sketch a face, cover it entirely with paint in a single breath, and then scrape it away. This repetitive act of erasing was a long reflection on relationships—a process of 'emptying' the superficial shells to touch the true essence.

The brown hue that dominates the canvas, echoing the colors of earth and wood, represents the familiar, neutral comfort I sought in social connections. Yet, the paint dripping helplessly down the canvas, yielding to gravity, symbolizes the impermanence of our existence, which can never be frozen in time.

The face that finally emerges through the act of erasure—that is the transparent essence I was looking for.

  진짜가 아닌 것 같은 숱한 관계들 속에서, 나는 가장 투명한 표정과 인간의 진짜 본질을 찾고자 했다.

얼굴을 세밀하게 스케치하고, 물감을 단숨에 덮은 뒤, 다시 깎아내듯 지워내는 반복적인 행위. 그것은 관계에 대한 오랜 사유이자, 본질에 닿기 위해 피상적인 껍데기를 '비워내는' 과정이었다.

화면을 지배하는 흙과 나무의 색, 갈색(Brown)은 관계 속에서 내가 찾고자 했던 가장 친숙하고 중립적인 위안의 색이다. 동시에 중력을 이기지 못하고 캔버스 위로 속절없이 흘러내리는 물감의 자국들은, 영원히 고정될 수 없는 존재의 무상함을 증명한다. 지워짐으로써 비로소 드러나는 얼굴, 그것이 내가 찾고자 했던 투명한 본질이다.
