We are constantly surrounded by images, from the news, advertisements, social media, and glowing screens. These idealized scenes dominate our gaze and gradually dull our capacity for genuine perception. The brown figure series (2013–2025) is Ah-young U’s attempt to restore this lost sensitivity through painting.

Since 2013, the artist has gathered anonymous figures from urban streets and digital spaces. By removing their backgrounds and isolating fleeting gestures and subtle nuances, she presents emotionally distant subjects suspended in distilled, momentary states. Raw brushstrokes, flowing pigment, and restrained color convey both vitality and underlying emotional currents.

This long-term series reflects a sustained exploration of contemporary sensibility through the traditional medium of painting. Through these nameless presences, viewers are invited to encounter personal emotions and reflections, gently unfolding in the undefined spaces held within each work.
